Tonight's stop, Sycamore Grove Campground in Red Bluff, CA.

Came down I-5 with a side trip on what Google Maps called "Volcanic Legacy Byway."  It sounded intriguing and I expected to see something volcanic.  But it turned out to be mile after mile of 2-lane highway winding through a dense pine forest (Shasta Trinity National Forest).  Quite nice but not an igneous rock to be found.  There are a number of national park campgrounds along the road (CA-89) that might be worth checking out on a future trip.

Sunny and windy again.  There are some magnificent views when coming south from Oregon through the passes into California.

I've stayed at this campground before.  It's a government campground.  It has nice grassy camp sites with lots of shade and tends to be only about half filled.  Maybe this is because one must reserve a site ahead of time and the online process is burdensome.  There is one big negative.  Once in awhile in the evening a terrible racket starts up somewhere outside the grounds.  It sounds like a jet turbine and can go off and on well past 11 pm.  I heard it last year and have seen it mentioned in online reviews.  The camp host, oddly, has no idea what causes it though he's been here several years.

Not every gas station has a view this nice.
That's Mount Shasta in the background.

Coming south out of Oregon you quickly start to see more arid
looking landscape.

Sycamore Grove Campground.  I'm pretty sure that is a sycamore
hanging over the tent.
